Nutritional Counseling
Fall Nutrition Update
HEART HEALTH
Nearly every senior citizen has heard the recommendation of an
aspirin a day for “heart health”. Perhaps far fewer realize many
common pain medications can actually damage the heart.
Heart failure is unappreciated as being more prevalent and dangerous
than cancer. More people get heart failure a year than get cancer
and they die from it sooner than the average cancer takes its
victim, within five years of diagnosis versus six years. You could
think of it as cancer of the heart.
Studies1 released this year show that the NSAIDs (non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs) actually cause heart failure in 20% of
cases. NSAIDs (aspirin, Motrin, Aleve, Advil, Naprosyn, ifbuprofen,
etc.) are in everyone’s gym, golf, and tennis bag, not to mention
purses, pockets and medicine cabinets. These NSAIDs are a leading
cause of leaky gut syndrome. This is of major importance when
we consider that the gastrointestinal tract is the highway for
absorption of the nutrients, which keep us alive and well. The
prescription varieties, even more dangerous, include Voltaren,
Celebrex, Vioxx, Daypro, and Relafen. Better to find the cause
of your mysterious pain than let NSAIDs cause heartburn, colitis,
leaky gut, autoimmune disease, bone deterioration and loss, and
now heart failure.
